HNA Pearl Island
Haikou Hainan, China
Client: HNA Development
Energy and Sustainability Consultants: ARUP Engineering
A pearl rises out of the waters near the city of Haikou. This metaphor symbolizes the “pearls of wisdom”, emphasizing the spiritual energy and enlightenment in Chinese culture. The skyline created by the dome shape is punctuated with Office and Residential Towers, Hotels, Amusement Attractions, Waterfront Village, Marina, Parks, Canals, Pathways, and HNA Cruise Terminal, tying this resort Island to other local and international locations - what we call the “Outerworld”. Beneath lies the “Innerworld”, a place of Shopping and Entertainment, Conference and Media Events, Grottos and Wellness, Aquariums and other Attractions. The entire island is linked together by an interior transit system and pedestrian movement system that bring together all the Districts into a unified and holistic Entertainment City.
To further demonstrate our desire to conceive the Resort City of the 21st Century, the idea of creating a zero-carbon city was imagined. By covering the “Dome Roof” with solar panels; planning on-site co-generation plants and various methods of reuseable waste and water; using energy-efficient building guidelines for construction techniques, building materials and technologies; and adopting other sustainable methods, HNA Pearl Island stands as the beacon of Tomorrow’s Resort Destination Attractions.
